Head, SCEW

Dr. Girija Mahale is a Psychiatrist and Heads the Symbiosis Centre for Emotional Wellbeing. She is also the Program Head for the recently launched B.Sc. in Mental Health UG degree Programme, under the Symbiosis Institute of Health Sciences. She has close to 15 years of experience in the field.

She is extremely passionate about mental health and has worked in various subspecialties such as Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Youth Mental Health, Deaddiction medicine etc. Her speciality area is Youth Mental health.

Apart from MD in Psychiatry from Seth GS Medical College, KEM Hospital, she has acquired her Fellowship from Royal Australian New Zealand College of Psychiatry where she extensively worked with age group of 12 to 25 years.

She is a compassionate leader, ardent advocate and teacher.


Deputy Head, SCEW

Dr Rahul R. Bagale is a compassionate Psychiatrist who is also Deputy Head for our Team. He completed his Post Graduation in Psychiatry (DPM) inĀ 2016 and has worked under senior Psychiatrists from Mumbai. He has been actively engaged in Community Awareness drive through different platforms. Mind Body Science, De-Addiction and Sexual Medicine are his special areas of interest.

He is a certified REBT Practioner and also practices Mindfulness in daily life. He has completed WPA & NIMHANS organised CertificateĀ course- Yoga in Mental Health. He believes in helping the students of Symbiosis to rediscover their innate potential through a humanistic & reality based approach. He is sincerely involved in clinical care, academic program, community awareness and research activities conducted under SCEW Team.


Senior Psychologist

Tahera Kauserali Lokhandwala is the Senior Psychologist of the Symbiosis Centre for Emotional Wellbeing and has graduated from the London School of Economics (LSE) with a Master of Science (MSc.) in Social and Cultural Psychology and B.A. in Psychology (Hons) from Fergusson College. She began her tenure with SCEW as a Psychological Counsellor since its launch in August 2018. She has been instrumental in supporting the growth and expansion of SCEW, its various curative, preventive and promotive mental health interventions, programmes and academic courses. She also serves as faculty for the BSc in Mental Health 4 year undergraduate degree programme with a key focus on psychological-socio-cultural determinants of mental health, Mental Health Advocacy and Community Mental Health.

As the former State Constant to UNICEF, she has authored a research report on quality education that influenced policy for 4000 schools across rural Maharashtra as well as authored an in-depth Life Skills curriculum grounded in psychological concepts for a Mentor Together Programme which is currently being utilized by adolescent girls across several states in India. She has also completed her Fellowship with Teach for India working closely with the needs of students, parents and teachers. She has pursued certificate courses in Leadership Development from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) and Women's Studies from Pune University. Tahera is a certified art therapist and believes in the expressive and meditative value of art. She has extensive experience working with children and young adults and supporting them through their development and healing journey. She firmly believes that quality education is one that has an all-round humanistic approach and actively integrates emotional health, wellbeing, positive values and mindsets into its system.
